Air
    Filter Clean/Remove
  The
Air Filter on a Classic Beetle consists of a bath of oil in a metal dish bolted
upon the Carburetor. The oil is used to
capture all the sludge that is sucked in so it does not go beyond the filter.

The Air filter sits on top of the Carburetor as seen here.

  You can
remove the lid of the filter by pulling up the two clips that hold it on and
  then just lift it off.

  The
filter does need checking from time to time and so I took the lid off the filter
to have a look. As you can see from the
images, there is little oil left and the red line, which is the level where
the oil is supposed to reach is rather lonely!

  To
remove the filter, simply undo the screw seen here but not completely. You can
  loosen the screw without
having to take off the tightening clip completely.

  Next, loosen
the tightening clip that holds the hose to the right side of the filter.

  Now remove
the hose by simply pulling it off the air filter. The Jubilee Clip will slide
down, ready to tighten up again later.

  You
can now lift the air filter unit completly off the Carburetor.

  When
you have given the filter a good clean, position it back on top of the Carburetor,
push the right sided hose back
on to the filter, tighten the Jubilee clip. Finally, screw back the main tightening
clip at the base of the filter so it is nice and
and fim on top of the Carburetor.
